Yesterday we were out putting up show posters and doing a flyer drop in shops and cafes in what we discovered was the rainiest day of the year so far in Edinburgh, and we found out we weren't that well equipped.
Edinburgh is infamous for rain, but more pertinently, August features extremely changeable weather. It will rarely rain for an entire day; it can go through a few phases of sun and rain within a day.
Here are our suggestions for keeping dry during the Fringe:
Clothes
Edinburgh is full of £3 plastic ponchos that won't last the day, and umbrellas impede your ability to hold and hand out flyers, so we hit Primark on Princes St.
Now, Primark hasn't got the best ethics record (or, indeed, quality record), but it was nice to see they're doing something about that (as a side note, this is important because the arts should be ethical and sustainable too). Also, it's Fringe time and we're all poor.
Your two main concerns are body and feet. It's currently wet without being cold, so a light zip-front parka with a hoodie and wellies are ideal.
The other option, if you have some time on your hands, is to scour the Nicolson St charity shops. You're quite likely to find a coat of some kind, and the likelihood of wellies being available is also quite strong.
Stuff in your bag
Posters and flyers have a key disadvantage in the rain: they are made of a material that deteriorates when wet, and we really don't want them to get soggy.
Typically, you might carry a stack of flyers in your bag or backpack around with you - and unless it's well 'proofed, the water might permeate, so make sure they're in plastic. A waterproof laptop cover is also essential.
Getting back home
Pick up a pair of soft, cushiony slippers in your travels, they are really nice to come home to. And don't forget to hang your clothes up to dry next to the radiator, ready for another day.
